From the 4th to the 14th of April, the The Leopold Tavern will be offering a selection of 20 different ales, real ciders and food all at once. Featuring over 80 casks, this yearly event is fast becoming a fixture for the more discerning drinker. Breweries include Dark Star, Thornbridge, local favourite Irving, the increasingly popular Brewdog, Burning Sky and Magic Rock. At the weekend we decided to pop down and get started on their list. In this first instalment I got stuck into the Harbour chilli and mango IPA, Irving’s Captain B rum ale and a Brewdog Cocoa Psycho. The highlight being the IPA (7%), a well balanced IPA that will be a bit of a crowd pleaser. As much of an Irving fan I am, the Captain B didn’t really float my boat, too many sweet hints of vanilla for my liking. The Cocoa Psycho (10%) was everything an imperial stout should be; huge depth of burnt coffee / dark chocolate flavour, with a thick treacle like consistency. So thus far I have only scratched the surface of this beer festival, thankfully time is on my hands and will be scheduling in another tasting sessions soon.
